What Interaktiv Tap is

Interaktiv Tap is a multi-touch instrument for iPad: you play your set with gestures, not knobs and jog wheels. It plays Traktor Pro 4 over USB MIDI — full decks, the mixer, EQ and kills, FX, loops, and recorded gestures, in sync both ways. It’s purpose-built and ready to play, not a blank MIDI template you set up yourself. It’s a one-time purchase: no subscription, no trial.

Requirements

iPad
Traktor Pro 4 (on a Mac or PC)
A USB cable to connect the iPad to the computer

The iPad appears to the computer as a standard MIDI device. There is no wireless mode — the link is USB.

Get started

Install Traktor Pro 4 on your Mac or PC.
Open Interaktiv Tap, then open Settings (the gear in the top-right corner).
In Settings, export the Traktor mapping (.tsi) and move it to your computer.
In Traktor: Preferences → Controller Manager → Add → Import, and load the .tsi.
Connect your iPad to the computer with a USB cable.
On a Mac, open Audio MIDI Setup and click Enable for the iPad, so it appears as a MIDI device.
In Controller Manager, set the In-Port and Out-Port to the iPad.
Play. The iPad now plays Traktor, in sync both ways.

Set up Traktor

A few one-time Traktor preferences line it up with what Interaktiv Tap plays. Set these once:

Four decks: Preferences → Decks Layout → 4 Decks. Interaktiv Tap plays four decks, so Traktor needs all four.
Four-band EQ: Preferences → Mixer → EQ Type → Xone. This gives the four-band EQ the app’s EQ page maps to — HIGH, MID H, MID L, LOW, each with a kill.
Mixer FX slots: On the same Mixer page, the Mixer FX list sets the four effects behind the app’s filter / Mixer-FX fader. The four slots are shared across every deck; choose what each one is, and its colour matches in Traktor and in the app.
Four FX units: Preferences → Effects → 4 FX Units, so each of the app’s FX quadrants has a unit to drive.
FX pre-selection: On the same Effects page, FX Pre-Selection sets which effects the FX units can load — the list you step through with SEL, PREV, and NEXT on an FX pad.

iPad settings (optional)

Two optional iPad settings make the surface feel better — nice to have, not required:

Full-screen, not windowed: Settings → Multitasking & Gestures → Full Screen Apps (rather than Windowed Apps or Stage Manager). It stops iPadOS from treating taps near the top edge as window resize or move, so the top row stays reliable.
Free up all ten fingers: On the same page, turn off Four & Five Finger App Switching so iPadOS doesn’t intercept multi-finger gestures — leaving all ten fingers for the surface.

Reading the screen

The screen is a 2×2 grid of quadrants, at positions A (top-left), B (top-right), C (bottom-left), and D (bottom-right). Each quadrant is either a deck or an FX unit, and carries a label — like TRACK C, REMIX A, or LIVE B — so you always know what you are touching.

The gestures

Interaktiv Tap uses a small set of multi-touch gestures so the surface stays uncluttered:

Single tap: Works the small single-cell buttons and the launch cells.
Two-finger tap: The bigger buttons — anything two cells wide or more — so you can’t fire play, switch a quadrant, or save a snapshot by accident.
One-finger press-and-hold: Reveals a button’s extra options for as long as you hold.
Two-finger press-and-hold: Opens a picker — or, on FREEZE, locks the app.
One-finger swipe: Expands or collapses a deck.

Hold to reveal more

If a control isn’t on the screen, it’s usually one hold away. Hold a button with one finger and its extra options appear for as long as you hold. The deck name button is the main one — depending on the page it reveals the page switches, the KEY lock, the Mixer-FX on/off, the headphone cue, and more. LOOP, SYNC, GAIN, and the FX button each reveal their own — loop sizing, tempo-bend nudges, gain on the volume fader, the Mixer-FX slots. On an FX unit, hold SEL to pick effects and SIZE to set a recorded loop’s length. The rule of thumb: if you want something you can’t see, hold.

Decks

Switch a quadrant between a deck and an FX unit

Two-finger tap the quadrant’s name button — the deck name or the “FX UNIT” label on the outer edge. It flips in place, keeping the rest of your layout.

Choose a deck flavor

Press the deck name button with two fingers and hold for about a second. A SELECT DECK picker opens with four choices. Two-finger tap one to switch; two-finger tap the header to cancel.

Track: A standard beatgrid deck — hot cues, loop, transport, key, and EQ.
Stem: Adds per-stem pages for the four stems’ volume, filter, and FX send — hold the deck name to reveal each page’s own per-stem buttons (MUTE on VOL, ON/OFF on FILTER and FX SEND).
Remix: Turns the Home page into a 4×4 cell launcher with four sample pages and per-slot monitor and punch.
Live Input: Passes external audio — an aux, mic, or turntable — through the channel’s EQ and filter.

Switch pages

A deck shows one page at a time. Press and hold the deck name button with one finger — the page buttons appear for as long as you hold, and you tap one to switch to it. The Home page (hot cues, key, transport) is the default — it has no button of its own, so to get back to it you tap the selected page again to deselect it. EQ is the four-band isolator with kills; Stem and Remix decks add VOL, FILTER, and FX SEND. A Track deck has just the EQ page.

Expand and collapse

Swipe the deck name button to expand a deck so it fills its column. Top decks (A and B) expand with a downward swipe; bottom decks (C and D) expand upward. When a deck expands, its column-neighbour shrinks to a single-row strip pinned to the top or bottom edge, keeping the essentials — volume, play, cue, meters. To go back to two equal decks, swipe the expanded deck’s name button the other way, or swipe that strip’s name button back toward its edge. Collapsing a deck returns it to its Home page. Live Input decks do not expand.

Performing

The Home page

The Home page is the deck’s default view — there’s no button for it; you return to it by deselecting whatever page is selected. On Track and Stem decks it shows eight hot cues, a horizontal KEY fader (tap above or below center to nudge a semitone, double-tap to reset), and a transport row. Two-finger tap PLAY to start or stop the deck, and two-finger tap SYNC to lock it to the tempo; hold SYNC to reveal tempo-bend nudges.

Hot cues

The Home page has eight hot cues. Tap a lit cue to jump to it. Tap an empty (dim) cue to set one at the current playhead. A cue’s color shows the type it has in Traktor: Cue (blue), Fade In (orange), Fade Out (red), Load (yellow), Grid (white), Loop (green).

Set a loop

Two-finger tap the LOOP button to start an auto-loop at the current size. To change the size, hold LOOP with one finger — ÷2 (halve) and ×2 (double) buttons appear; tap them to step through 1/32 up to 32 beats. Two-finger tap LOOP again to release the loop. (Live Input decks have no loop.)

Start and stop a deck

Two-finger tap PLAY in the deck’s transport row (Home page) to start the deck; two-finger tap it again to stop. (Two fingers so a stray touch can’t fire it mid-set.)

Sync a deck

Two-finger tap SYNC to lock the deck to the master tempo; two-finger tap again to release. To nudge the timing by hand, hold SYNC with one finger — ‹ and › buttons appear where PLAY was; press and hold ‹ to bend the tempo down or › to bend it up, and let go to stop.

Change the key (pitch)

The KEY fader on the Home page shifts the deck’s pitch. Drag it for a continuous change, or tap just past center to either side to nudge it a semitone — up to ±12. Double-tap to snap back to the original key. Hold the deck name button to reveal a LOCK toggle beside the fader — Traktor’s keylock; with keylock on the KEY fader turns blue, with it off the fader is white.

Remix cells

A Remix deck shows a 4×4 grid of cells. Tap a loaded cell to launch it — if Traktor’s quantize is on it starts in time, snapped to the quantize size you’ve set (a beat, a bar, and so on); otherwise it starts at once. You can stop a cell only while it’s actually playing — tap the playing cell to stop it (and if another cell is queued, that first tap cancels the queue instead). A cell that’s only cued, not yet playing, can’t be stopped — only re-triggered; that’s Traktor’s behavior, not the app’s. Hold the deck name button to reveal the P1–P4 sample pages, each slot’s Monitor and Punch, and the deck’s PLAY and SYNC — which sit in the transport row on Track and Stem decks but live under the hold on a Remix deck. Cells show their state by color — loaded, queued, playing, or stopping.

The mixer

Each channel has a volume fader — hold GAIN to trim gain on the same fader — a four-band EQ with a kill per band, and a filter that doubles as the Mixer FX amount. Hold the deck name to reveal a headphones (PFL) cue button below the volume fader; while cue is on, the volume fader shows a headphones icon.

Kill an EQ band

On the deck’s EQ page, hold the deck name button with one finger — the band faders shrink and each band gets its own KILL button: HIGH, MID H, MID L, LOW. Tap a band’s KILL to drop it; tap again to bring it back. LOW is the bass. (You can also flick a band’s EQ fader hard to center to slam it out — see the slam-juggle.)

Filter & Mixer FX

Each channel has a FLTR fader on its right edge — a center-detent filter. Drag it up for a high-pass (thins out the lows), down for a low-pass (cuts the highs); the center is off. That same fader doubles as the channel’s Mixer FX amount: hold the FX button to reveal the four Mixer-FX slots, tap one to select it, and the fader then drives that effect (its label shows SLOT 1–4). Hold the deck name button to reveal an ON/OFF toggle under the fader that switches the channel’s Mixer FX on or off; with it off, the fader dims.

Cue a deck in your headphones

Hold the deck name button with one finger — an HP (headphones) button appears below the volume fader. Tap it to send that channel to your headphone cue; while it’s on, the volume fader shows a small headphones icon. Tap HP again to turn cue off. On an expanded deck the HP button is always there — no hold needed — in the top-row inner cell, where GAIN sits on a normal deck.

FX units

An FX unit centers on an XYZ pad with three axes. The first finger you put down drives X and Y; add a second finger and its distance from the first sets the third axis. Put them down one after the other, not together — the first finger down is the one that takes X and Y, so dropping both at once can swap which is which. A dry/wet fader sets the mix. Hold SEL to step through effects with PREV and NEXT. Four routing buttons send decks A, B, C, and D into the unit. Flip an FX unit's quadrant to a deck and the unit keeps running — the deck's name button shows that unit's send routing (the A–D cells) and rings green while its recorded automation is still playing.

Faders

All faders use relative drag: touch anywhere on the fader and move — you do not have to grab the handle. EQ, filter, and key faders have a strong catch at center, so neutral is easy to find. Double-tap or two-finger tap a fader to reset it, even mid-move.

The slam-juggle move

On the EQ, filter, and key faders, a fast flick toward the middle latches at exact neutral — so you can slam a band or the filter in and out rhythmically and always land cleanly on center. Pull back out to release it, or lift your finger to cross straight past. A slow, careful move slides through the center instead, so you can still set any value precisely.

Recording & looping

Record a gesture loop

Each FX unit can record what you do on the pad as a loop, into one of two slots. Tap REC to arm and pick a slot, then touch the pad — recording starts the moment you touch (REC disarms). It captures in beats; when you lift your finger the loop length snaps to the nearest beat, so it’s quantized and always plays back in sync, and the loop starts the instant you release. While a loop is playing, touch the pad and a dimmed green ‘ghost’ marker shows where the recorded loop is driving it — your finger takes over, so you can ride the loop or rejoin it; lift off and the loop drives the pad again. Hold SIZE to halve or double a playing loop’s length. The recorder follows the incoming clock, so start Traktor’s clock first — the SYNC button blinks as a reminder if it isn’t running.

The Loop Recorder

To record audio, use the Loop Recorder in the header: tap REC to capture a phrase, then PLAY to loop it back, and blend it into the mix with the DRY/WET fader. Hold SIZE to set the loop length — 4, 8, 16, or 32 beats. The Undo/Redo button becomes Delete when nothing is recorded. (This loops audio, unlike the FX gesture recorder, which loops a pad move.)

FREEZE & lock

FREEZE lets you play freely and snap back. It captures your performance moves — faders, EQ, filter, loop, key — but not the master tempo or the selected FX, which stay as they are.

Hold with one finger: Snapshots the current sound. Change anything, then release to return to where you were.
Two-finger tap: Saves a snapshot you can come back to hands-free — the button becomes RESET.
Two-finger press-and-hold (about a second): Locks the app so you can wipe or clean the screen without anything responding, while the music keeps playing. Two-finger tap again to unlock.

Staying aware

The header keeps you informed at a glance: the live tempo, channel and FX meters, and a small performance readout so you can see the app is healthy through a long set. Nothing hides what is going on.

Master tempo & sync

The header carries the set’s master controls. The master tempo strip bends the overall tempo — drag or tap it to nudge Traktor’s clock up or down. Beside it, the SYNC toggle sends Traktor’s MIDI clock: turn it on to start the clock so loops, the gesture recorder, and the Loop Recorder run in time — it re-fires the clock even if it was already on. Because the recorders follow this clock, switch SYNC on before you record. (This is the master clock, separate from each deck’s own SYNC.)

Settings

Open Settings from the gear in the top-right corner. So a stray tap can never open it mid-performance, it opens on a deliberate one-second press, not a quick tap. Settings holds the Traktor mapping export — tap to share or save the .tsi file, then import it once in Traktor under Preferences → Controller Manager → Add → Import. Two more options live here: a text-size slider that enlarges the text in Settings and the in-app manual (the performance surface stays fixed), and Show touch points, which draws a soft ring under each fingertip — handy for screen recordings and screencasts (off by default).

How it talks to Traktor (MIDI)

Interaktiv Tap speaks standard MIDI — CC for continuous moves and notes for the Remix cells. It runs both ways: your moves drive Traktor, and Traktor’s state (play, loop, FX, cue, meters, cell state) echoes back so the iPad always matches. The bundled .tsi mapping wires it to Traktor’s commands; export it from Settings and import it once in Controller Manager.

Troubleshooting

Why doesn’t Traktor respond to the iPad?: Check the USB cable, confirm the iPad is enabled in Audio MIDI Setup, confirm the .tsi is imported in Controller Manager, and make sure the In-Port and Out-Port are both set to iPad.
My iPad faders move but nothing happens in Traktor — why?: Open Traktor → Preferences → Controller Manager and confirm the mapping’s device and ports match your iPad.
Why doesn’t the iPad appear as a MIDI device?: On a Mac, open Audio MIDI Setup, find the iPad, and click Enable. Then set it as the In-Port and Out-Port in Traktor’s Controller Manager.
Where is Settings?: The Settings button is the gear in the top-right corner. It opens on a deliberate one-second press, not a quick tap.
